What exactly is an F1b Cavapoo and how does it differ from an F1 Cavapoo?
It can be confusing because that little ‘b’ can make a huge difference so keep reading as I explain the differences.
An F1 Cavapoo is the result of mating a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to a purebred Poodle. The puppies are then 50% Poodle and 50% Cavalier.
An F1b Cavapoo on the other hand requires one of the parent dogs to be an F1 Cavapoo and the other parent dog to either be a purebred Cavalier or a purebred Poodle. Most of the time, the Poodle is the second parent dog.
The ‘b’ stands for backcross meaning that a first or second generation Cavapoo has been bred back to a purebred dog. (Cavalier or Poodle)
An F1b Reverse Cavapoo is when an F1 Cavapoo is mated with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This means that the puppies will be 75% Cavalier and 25% Poodle.
The Reverse Cavapoo’s coat will almost certainly resemble the Cavalier and should be straight and wavy with maybe a slight curl.
The characteristics of the Cavalier will be dominant (not a bad thing) and these dogs will shed just like a Cavalier does.
The bonus for Cavalier King Charles lovers is that they can have the look that they love of the Cavalier and hopefully have a healthier dog that will live a longer life due to hybrid vigor.
The size of the F1b Cavapoo will depend greatly on which type of Poodle was used.
The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the Poodle breed. They can reach a height of around 10 inches and weigh between 6 and 9 pounds.
The next size up is the Miniature Poodle. There height can range between 11 to 15 inches and they can weigh 15 to 17 pounds.
These are the two most common sizes used for breeding Cavapoos as the Standard Poodle, being the largest Poodle can reach a height of over 15 inches and average out at around 22 inches.
F1b Cavapoos look almost the same to F1 Cavapoos except that their hair could be curlier and their legs can be longer thanks to the Poodle genetics.
Being 75% Poodle, the F1b Cavapoo’s coat is more likely to have tighter curls and they should also be low to non shedding.
They will need more regular trimming than the F1 Cavapoo unless you prefer the longer look.
Breeders have purposely bred F1b Cavapoos for people looking for non shedding dogs making them the perfect companion for those suffering from allergies.
Cavapoos are known for there loyal, cuddly and loving temperaments no matter which generation they are. The F1b Cavapoo is no exception.
They are friendly, sweet and social dogs.
It is important to socialize your puppy when it is very young. This applies to all dogs, no matter the breed or mix breed. Cavapoos respond well to positive reinforcement which needs to be started immediately.
This will ensure that you raise a well balanced pup and eliminate any timid or bad behavior going forward.
Temperament is not just a result of genetics although it does play a part. The way that you train and behave with your Cavapoo will also be a huge determining factor as to how their personalities will develop.
F1b Cavapoos can be more active and are highly intelligent. They need to have mental stimulation to avoid them getting into mischief and a daily walk is needed to satisfy there active nature.
An adult f1b Cavapoo will have a curly coat because of the dominance of the Poodle gene.
They should look just like teddy bears which is the typical look of the Cavapoo.
They can come in a range of colors just like any F1 Cavapoo and as mentioned before, there legs can be longer than usual.
